This unit seeks to explore the differences between Hinduism and scientific approaches. It investigates Hindu attitudes to creation, evolution and the environment.

It may be argued that Hindus today have a less developed range of responses to the issues and concerns raised by science than the Christian tradition. Some scholars may say that western scientific thinkinggenerally, ‘has had a marginal impact on the traditional systems of thought of Asia’ (Harris, 1994: 12).

However, some Hindus may see a real correspondence between the teachings contained in the sacred scriptures and the discoveries of science. Whatever may be the case, most Hindus prefer the term ‘sanatanadharma’ or ‘eternal truth’ for a religious tradition which spans thousands of years and embraces a range of viewpoints.

This unit consists of 3 lessons and is suitable for students aged from 11 to 14 years
