SRSP 11-16 Topic 1 Unit 2c – How does Hinduism make sense of the world?

This unit seeks to explore the differences between Hinduism and scientific approaches. It investigates Hindu attitudes to creation, evolution and the environment.

It may be argued that Hindus today have a less developed range of responses to the issues and concerns raised by science than the Christian tradition. Some scholars may say that western scientific thinkinggenerally, ‘has had a marginal impact on the traditional systems of thought of Asia’ (Harris, 1994: 12).

However, some Hindus may see a real correspondence between the teachings contained in the sacred scriptures and the discoveries of science. Whatever may be the case, most Hindus prefer the term ‘sanatanadharma’ or ‘eternal truth’ for a religious tradition which spans thousands of years and embraces a range of viewpoints.

This unit consists of 3 lessons and is suitable for students aged from 11 to 14 years

Key Questions

  • Are there any parallels between a Hindu understanding of the universe and an orthodox scientific one?
  • What are the interconnected ideas within Hinduism that are relevant when considering the environment?

Some of the materials can be viewed on screen and some can be downloaded for editing or printing. To view the pdf files you need Adobe Acrobat Reader. See the about section for more details.
