SRSP 11-16 Topic 1 Unit 2d – How does Islam make sense of the world?

This unit seeks to help students explore the relationship between science and the Muslim faith. It will ask the questions, ‘Does Islam encourage science? Are there conflicts between Islam and some aspects of science? Is there an Islamic attitude to the environment?’

Teachers and students will need a basic understanding of the main features of Islam as a world religion. This will include the 5 pillars of Islam: prayer, fasting, the declaration of belief, pilgrimage and charity. No special theological understanding is required but an understanding of Muslim belief concerning the Oneness of God (Tawhid) is quite a central one in this module.

This unit consists of 3 lessons and is suitable for students aged from 11 to 14 years

Key Questions

  • How does Islam view the relationship between science and religion?
  • Is there one Islamic view of this relationship?
  • Has your attitude to science and religion been changed by your work in this unit?
  • How do you think a Muslim might react to environmental issues?

Some of the materials can be viewed on screen and some can be downloaded for editing or printing. To view the pdf files you need Adobe Acrobat Reader. See the about section for more details.
