SRSP 16-19 Topic 4 Unit 1c – Evolution and Creation

This unit seeks to give students and teachers an understanding of evolutionary theory, both in its early forms and more modern versions. It will also cover various reactions of Christians to creation and evolution; Young-Earth Creationism (literalism), Progressive Creationism and Theistic Evolution/Evolutionary Creationalism. The students will consider the main issues and beliefs attached to different viewpoints:

Naturalistic Evolution: Evolution explains our origins [covers stellar, chemical & organic] and is claimed to remove the need for God.

Theistic Evolution: It is possible to believe both in evolution and that God created the world.

Young-Earth Creationism: Belief in a God who created the world is claimed to rule out belief in evolution.

The students will also examine the Scopes Monkey Trial as an important case study of the kind of debate that has taken place over issues concerning creation and evolution.

This unit consists of 6 lessons and is suitable for students aged from 16 to 19 years

Key Questions

  • Does evolutionary theory give us a total explanation to the mystery of our existence?
  • Is it possible to believe in both evolution and creation?
  • Has the development of the theory of evolution got rid of the need for God?
  • Does either the theory of evolution or the concept of creation suggest answers to the problem of the existence of evil?
  • Could the process of natural selection have been put in place by a loving God?
